Stafford Group's
Celebrating RDA's 50th
Stafford Group

Whittington & Lichfield RDA Group.

As Wednesday morning approaches, excitement builds as the children from Rocklands School, Lichfield prepare to make their way to their riding lesson with Whittington & Lichfield RDA Group at Coton House Farm. This new venture only started in September 2018 however it was evident from the start of the massive benefits these children with additional needs and disabilities will gain from this experience, enhanced even more so by the warm and welcoming environment provided by all involved.

In the words of one of the children ‘I like seeing Sandra & Helen and my leader is really nice. My lessons with the RDA have helped me to be braver with the horses and it helps me with my exercises. Some of my friends have never sat on a horse before and now they really love it and ask every week if they can go.’
Along with the overall sensory benefits that the children are gaining from the ridden and non-ridden sessions, Whittington & Lichfield RDA group have acquired some new and invaluable volunteers who look forward to the Wednesday morning as much as the children do. The infectious smiles from all the children and adults involved remind us all of what the RDA is about.
A massive thank you to Helen & Darren at Coton House Farm, Sandra who contributes so much of her time to the group, to the invaluable volunteers who without this would not be possible and of course to the amazing children at Rocklands School who brighten up everyone’s week.

At the start of November this year several of our riders took their Proficiency tests....grades 3 and 4. Wonderfully every rider passed which was amazing but special mention has to be made of  Matthew Richards 14 years old who managed to pass his grade 4 test with an incredible score of 100%!   A wonderful picture here of Matty with his certificate and Ocean the pony he regularly rides. Thanks to Sue Lang, Stafford County Chairman who presented the certificates. Well done Matty.

Tettenhall Group Open Day  Summer 2017

At the Mill with the outside school surrounded by stalls and produce the young riders gave several exciting displays to show off their hard work and achievements. Blessed with good weather a large visiting audience turned out to see what the RDA is all about.

Supported by former jump jockey Richard Pitman the day was a huge success. Richard, whose charm is legendary, made a good day a great day, taking special care to talk with every one there, making their day with his genuine interest and enthusiasm for riders, volunteers and ponies, especially the latter. Richard donated a signed copy of his book about the late Queen Mother's love of racing which raised a lot of money for our local fund. How do you repay such kindness, save for a resounding RDA thank you from all there, the applause was almost deafening!

"RDA can make Dreams come true"
and that is from Jackie Doughton a long standing rider with the Tettenhall Group who qualified for the National Championships at our Regional event in May but whose horse was not able to get to Hartpury. But the "network" sprung into action with the Hereford based Ride2Achieve team, with Victor their horse, stepping up to the plate.  Jackie and Victor finished second in the Walk only Freestyle giving Jackie her dream of performing at our top event.
Erica Pinfold of North Staffordshire Group has recently been recognized by RDA National Office as their Regional Volunteer of the Year for the West Mercia Region.
Involved with the RDA North Staffs group for more years than we can recall, Erica continues to give unfailing support to the group every week despite reaching a significant birthday (70).
The Group run several sessions for adults and children every Monday on the back of huge time and effort put in by Erica to keep everything running smoothly for the riders. She arranges the ponies, coordinates volunteers, parents and riders, doing so with unfailing patience and enthusiasm; all with such a positive attitude and beaming smile. Such is her willingness to take on responsibility, Erica has been known to be on the phone and email supporting the Group and ensuring the riders have the best possible experience, even when she is on holiday abroad!
During the winter break Erica organised a team of volunteers to go onto the local special school to teach the riders Stable Management and equine theory. The teachers reported a great success with the children so engaged and responsive to the sessions.
Erica is a great fundraiser. Last year she took part in many activities including a 90 mile "All Saints Way" walk, she organised the making and sale of 88 Christmas wreaths, sorted a stall at the local Victorian market with volunteers selling Christmas cards, to name but a few.
Without Erica's constant support and dedication the Group would not be able to function and serve the 4 sessions they have with an average of 23 riders each week.
Erica was presented with the award by Celia Baker, outgoing Regional Chairman who commented, “It was a pleasure to meet and present the award to such a humble lady who is clearly devoted to the RDA, her Group and the riders she does so much for.”

Rain did not dampen sprits at the PARKLANDS GROUP Open Day on Saturday 10 December when Mickey and Minnie Mouse turned out to join Santa and his Elves for the celebrations.
Parklands is the newest Group in the Region and is the result of a driving ambition of ALISON and WARRICK RAMSEIER based in and around their family owned stables near Middleton, Staffordshire.

A warm welcome was given to a host of guests, visitors and riders when Alison and her team put on a display of riding skills achieved by 2 of their regular pupils. “In only 9 months these riders have shown great improvement since we formed the Group. They have really taken to our horses and ponies. It’s amazing to see the difference in people in such a short time. It makes us even more determined to grow the Group.”

First on display was ALANA BOSWORTH a young lady who was pleased to meet her challenge.  Riding SAM in a series of walk and trot exercises ALANA showed excellent balance, poise and control whilst under the gaze of Anona White (Regional Chair), Fiona Round (County Chair), Sue Lang (County Coach), and Doug Smith one of the RDA Vice Presidents. Wow what pressure!

“She is so much more confident in herself and has overcome so many challenges in her life since joining RDA. She loves it here and they just know how to get her to grow in confidence it is wonderful,” commented her very proud Grandma and Mum.

Up next was RYAN HAUGHEY who rides DIEGO every Saturday and it brings him deep joy. RYAN showed skills gathering up toys from the basket then heading his pony off to find the matching picture around the arena fence. It was most interesting to see Alison using her smart phone and blue tooth wrist microphone to play sounds to Ryan to help him with his recognition; a brilliant use of extra sensory ideas for a child who has a learning challenge.

Awarding Alana, Ryan and 3 other “young stars” their Endeavour Awards, Anona White commented on their determination and enthusiasm and obvious joy in riding.  “This is a wonderful start by highly focussed coaches and volunteers; keep going, as what you have achieved is wonderful”.

And so say all of us....

The fourth annual

Staffordshire Fun Day 2016 Report

Fingers were crossed for a fine day as parking was on a field, and all the arenas are outside. We were incredibly lucky and the event took place in ideal weather, so we could enjoy the views across the fields.

There were dressage and handy rider classes, and four Groups (North Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands, Stafford and Tettenhall) entered  a total of 38 riders. In addition there were classes for Arts and Crafts.

All the horses behaved well to give the riders the best chance to show how well they can perform in competition, and lots of smiling faces were proof that everyone was enjoying themselves,

Congratulations to all competitors.

Endeavour Awards

Streetly Group RDA proudly present two adult riders John and Jimmy with their Endeavour certificates recently.

Both riders have worked really hard and are well deserving of their awards.  The horse in the picture is Leo a  handsome boy who behaved so well during the photo shoot. Leo has a very calm and gentle nature and is perfect for the job!
